CAF2022 awards:Cameroon National Team, Aboubakar, Toko Ekambi and Anguissa all nominated-see full list as CAF release nominees for CAF2022 awards

CAF2022 awards nominees released

Cameroon saw there players shortlisted by CAF for the player of the year award.

Zambo Anguissa, Karl Toko Ekambi and Vincent Aboubakar were all shortlisted for the Award. Only Senegal(5), Morocco(4) and Egypt(4) had more nominations in the Men’s player of the year Category than Cameroon(3).

The award Ceremony will take place on the 21st of July.

It’s worth noting that the last time the awards was held was in 2019 in Egypt and has not been held since then due to COVID 19.

A RECAP OF THE YEAR

It was the a busy 2022 for CAF that saw Senegal win the African nations Cup in Cameroon after defeating Egypt in the finals on Penalties.

Host Cameroon finished 3rd after coming from three goals down to draw with Burkina Faso in the third place match before going on to defeat them on Penalties.

Sadio Mane won the Best Player of the Tournament after guiding Senegal to their first ever Afcon trophy, scoring 3 goals and providing 2 assists in the process.

Eduardo Mendy won the Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament as he was also a vital part of Senegal’s success, saving two penalties in the finals.

Vincent Aboubakar won the Top scorer award after scoring a record 8 goals in the tournament, putting him 3 clear of team mate Toko Ekambi who scored 5 goals.

It was indeed an excellent tournament with new comers Gambia reaching the Quarterfinals before getting eliminated by host Cameroon and Comoros who were also making their first ever appearance reaching the Round of 16.

The year also saw Africa discover its five representatives in this years World Cup in Qatar.

A repeat of the Afcon finals saw Senegal defeat Egypt on Penalties after a 1-1 aggregate draw to qualify for the World Cup.

Ghana had the away goal rule to thank after playing 1-1 tie in Nigeria to book their spot in Qatar.

Morocco were too good for DR Congo as they demolished them 5-2 on aggregate to comfortably book their spot in Qatar 2022.

Tunisia joint their North African brothers Morocco thanks their 1-0 aggregate win over Mali.

The most strongest of ties on paper which also turned out to be the most Dramatic saw Cameroon defeat Algeria 2-1 in Bilda thanks to a 124th minute extra time winner from Karl Toko Ekambi to send Cameroon to their 8th World Cup participation. Algeria were 1-0 winners in Cameroon and just needed to avoid defeat on home turf to book their spot in Qatar.

It’s worth noting that Players performances across their respective clubs shall also be taken into Consideration when voting for the Best player categories.
