“We win, we are all Germans, we lose, we are termed m0nkeys” Youssoufa Moukoko reacts to racial abuse he received during Germany’s 1-1 draw with Israel in their Euro U21 Opening match
18 Year-old Cameroonian-Born Germany U21 international Youssoufa Moukoko, was racially abused after he missed a penalty during Germany U21 1-1 draw with Israel U21 in their opening match of the 2023 Euro U21 championship.
Moukoko and team-mate Jessic Ngankam missed penalties during Germany’s 1-1 draw against Israel in Euro U21 opener. They suffered heavy racial abuse from fans on the pitch and also online.
During his post match interview, Moukoko condemned the racial abuse him and his team mate received after the match, stating that they only recognized them as Germans when they win.
“When we win, we are all Germans. If we lose, these monkey comments come,’ he said post-match. ‘Jessic got them, I got them. It’s just not part of football.’
‘We’re trying to help the team. When you get messages like that, it’s disgusting.
‘This time it hurt. No player misses a penalty on purpose”
‘I’m starting to have had enough. It’s time to make a statement against it.’
Moukoko was born in Yaounde, Cameroon but decided to represent the German National team over Cameroon.
Though no one supports racism, the incident has sparked massive reactions from Cameroonians online who are asking the question if that would have happened if he decided to represent his home country Cameroon.
Moukoko was part of the German team that participated at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
However, he still eligible to play for the Cameroonian national team according to FIFA rules.
