AFCON: Africa cup of nations 2023 has been postponed in Ivory Coast ( see details)

News

Africa cup of nations 2023 has been postponed in Ivory Coast. After a meeting in Morocco, organizing body of AFCON ( CAF) decided to push AFCON 2023  forward due to two reasons.

The new confirmed year by CAF is 2024 and will be played between January and February 2024!

The tournament initially had to kick off in June 2023, but due to rainy weather during that time in Ivory Coast, the period of January to February was deemed better.

In this case, it could not also be played in January 2023 given the proximity of the FIFA World Cup scheduled from November to December 2022.

Stadia under construction in Ivory coast

Moving the tournament to January and February 2024 equally gives Ivory Coast ample time to get set. As of last month, the country had just one authorised stadium per CAF regulations.

Remember what happened to Cameroon last year in Ivory Coast when they went for a friendly match ?

Ivory coast won Cameron 2-1 in the second leg of their friendly match and Cameroon players complained of the nature of the pitch  “bad pitch”.

This made to CAF suspend football games in Ivory coast due to the nature of their pitches and after a survey in Ivory coast, only one stadium was up to CAF standard.
