FIFA president Infantino praises Morocco, Senegal and congratulates Cameroon on their FIFA World Cup performance.
FIFA president Gianni Infatino has congratulated African teams on their performance in this year’s FIFA World Cup.
During an interview yesterday in Doha, the World football governing body president praised the performance of Africa’s representatives in this year’s tournament.
“Morocco’s performance is fantastic. They played with heart and undeniable talent. The young coach showed how to play attractive and effective football. Congratulations to the other African teams, like Senegal who passed the group stage but fell to an extremely strong England. Tunisia, Ghana and Cameroon were also in a position to qualify on the last day of pool ,” he said.
The President of FIFA also commented on the fact that Africa will have 9.5 spots in the new 48 teams FIFA World Cup format which starts as from 2026
“The fact that we are going to double the number of African teams in 2026, we will be able to rejoice in new strong performances from African teams”.
Though only Senegal and Morocco progressed to the next round, the tournament saw all African representatives win at least a match each. Tunisia stunned France 1-0 but unfortunately finished third with four points, Ghana defeated South Korea 3-2 in a thrilling encounter while Cameroon stunned Brazil 1-0 to finish third of their group with four points.
Senegal reach the knock out stage for the second time in their history but were defeated by England 3-0 in the round of 16. Morocco came out as the dark horses of the tournament as they became the first African nation to reach the FIFA World Cup semi finals. In their brilliant run to the finals, they defeated Belgium 2-0, Canada 2-1 and played a goalless draw with Morocco in the group stage. In the round of 16, they defeated Spain on penalty shoot out and also stunned Portugal 1-0 in the quarter finals before loosing to France 2-0 in the Semi finals. The Moroccans play their third place match today against Croatia and they will be looking to become the first African nation to finish in a medals position in the World Cup.
