Has ‘Amapiano’ taken the throne from Afrobeats as the hottest music genre in Africa?
Ko-c, Wax dey, Wavelez, and some other Cameroonian entertainers have hopped on this new music genre called ” Amapiano.
From my research, Wikipedia shows Amapiano experienced a gross increase in the African music scene in 2020 ( streams, chats, playlists, and air plays). 2016 to 2020 has been a fantastic journey for Amapiano fans.
But at some point, the onus lies on us to point out that Amapiano has transcended far higher than the stakes were back in 2019, While Afrobeats had to bow to COVID-19 restrictions. Amapiano on the other leg soared like a lion, seizing the opportunity to catch an animal.

Why is Amapiano so popular in Africa now?
Amapiano is so popular because of its relatable and sonically delicious sound. The sub-genre is made up of a refined blend of South Africa’s house music, kwaito, Bacardi, targeted at delivering harmonic melodies that prompt you to dance mindlessly.
Without any lyric strength, the genre is popular for its top-notch “vibe delivery” and unique beats. The composition is so refined and sophisticated that you may dance nonstop without hearing a single word sounds funny right ?. The genre has the biggest song out of Africa now ” Jerusalema” by Master KG featuring Nomcebo.
Amapiano might not be a strong movement as Afrobeats, but it’s certainly gained global traction for its wanton uniqueness.
With front leaders including Master KG, Dj Maphorisa, Focalistic, Shomadjozi, among others who’ve also from time to time tapped into Afrobeat’s massive audience to lend credence to their budding style of music.
WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF THIS AMAPIANO?
This is a very crucial point for Amapiano as a sub-genre of music trying to creep its way to the top.
Over the years, South Africa has pump more talent & vigor into the Branding of this particular genre, given its disposition to be viral.
Musicians all over Africa have constantly complained about how Nigerian creators can generate way more revenue than others by eclipsing sounds and making them sound better than the original owners.
We have all witnessed the 80% local content and 20% Foreign content fight in Cameroon 🇨🇲.

Nigerians have done this with so many other genres and they might likely do the same to Amapiano. If South Africans aren’t careful, the highest number of Amapiano hits will come from Nigeria and the genre would soon become part of Afrobeats.
