Hugo Ekitike drops updates on his International future, confirms talks with Samuel Eto’o during an interview with French newspaper L’Equipe.

Hugo Ekitike is one of the top promising talents in France Ligue 1 at the moment. The 19 year old Reims forward has been at the radar of top European clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea, with Newcastle United also showing strong interest.

Though born in France, Ekitike has a Cameroonian father. Samuel Eto’o was recently reported to be in talks with the player on a possibility of him Representing the Cameroon national team.

The player was named in French U20 squad for an upcoming tournament in Europe.

Speaking to L’Equipe, the player was asked about his future at the international level.

“I am someone who does not minimize anything. It’s not the A, but it’s still a national selection for your country. It means that you are one of the top players. It is consecration, a pride” said the 19 year old on being called up to represent France U20 national team.

“Join the A[France senior team]? Of course! It would be a lie to say the opposite. But I’m far from it”. Continued the player when asked by the Journalist if he dreams of joining the French National team.

However, Ekitike did not close the door to the Indomitable Lions and the president of the Cameroonian federation, Samuel Eto’o. The forward does not want to choose a selection at the moment and prefers to focus on his club career.

“The 2022 World Cup? Why not? But I have other things to do before. You have to take the moments that arrive one by one. When it’s time, I’ll ask myself, “What am I doing?” For now, quiet,”

“For me, he is the greatest African player of all time. When you bring Samuel Eto’o back to your stadium, you begin to take stock of the dimension you take. Of course, I have a special attachment to Cameroon even if I am French. These are my roots too. But today, I don’t prefer to focus on a selection choice,” explained Hugo Ekitike about the possibility of playing for Cameroon.

Ekitike has missed a lot of games this season through injury. However he’s still managed to register 9 goals and 4 assists in 21 league appearances this season.
