“Our goal is atleast the World Cup semi-finals” Cameroon head coach Rigobert Song
Indomitable Lions head coach Rigobert Song is aiming to reach atleast the World Cup semi finals with Cameroon.
Speaking with the Cove magazine, the former Indomitable Lions captain also outlined the possibility of local players representing Cameroon at the World Cup.
Rigobert Song helped Cameroon secure a place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup by defeating Algeria in the play offs on aggregate.
“You know, the president of Fecafoot is passionate. Without being clear to me, he suggested after qualifying that he wants to cross the quarter-finals. This means that our goal is at least the semi-finals,” said the national football team coach.
He also went further to talk about the possibility of Local players making the World Cup selection.
For this edition of the World Cup, the Cameroonian technician wants to go with the best. Including local players who have stood out. “The national selection is the grouping of the best players. If local players are among the best, they will be selected for the World Cup. Remember that several former Lions went to the World Cup while playing in the local championship. I am one of them. I am also thinking of Pierre Njanka who scored a memorable goal against Austria in 1998. So, there is no reason for local players to be excluded. Cameroonians should know that the national selection is open to everyone. The proof is that Souaibou Marou and Patient Wassou, two young members of Coton Sport de Garoua, were called for the crucial match against Algeria. My staff and I live in Cameroon, we crisscross the stadiums to observe and be able to find, if necessary, elements that can help our team,” says Rigobert Song Bahanag.
