Joel Matip representing Cameroon in the 2014 World Cup

Indomitable Lions head coach Rigobert Song is on a mission to convince Joel Matip to return to National team. Joel Matip, who has not made an appearance for the Indomitable Lions since 2014 after falling out with the national team for reasons not disclosed.

The 30 year old Liverpool defender is undoubtedly amongst the best Center backs in the premier league this season, forming a solid partnership with Virgil Van Dijk.

Cameroonians have been left diverse opinions on whether the Indomitable Lions technical staff should convince the player or they should let him go and focus on young and new talents.

Here are some reasons why Joel Matip joining the Cameroon national team ahead of the World Cup play offs could be good news for the Cameroonians.

His experience is needed at the back.               If you followed AFCON 2021 you will notice that Cameroon conceded most of their goals from defensive errors. Joel Matip joining the defense will prove vital as he will coordinate the defense and he has more experience at the center back position than any of other Cameroon center back.

Form a Solid Patnership with Castelleto.
Many Cameroonians fell inlove with 26 year old Jean Charles Castelleto during the AFCON 2021 tournament. His cool head and ability to withstand pressure made many Cameroonians prefer his as the first choice Center back. Joel Matip has this same qualities and more and him forming a center back pairing with Castelleto will be rock solid.

It’s the World Cup we are talking about and we need all the experience we can get.
Only Vincent Aboubakar and Eric Maxim Choupo Moting have participated in World Cup before in the current Cameroon National team squad. In case Cameroon defeats Algeria in the World Cup play offs and qualify for Qatar 2022, it will be a wise choice if the squad is mixed with experienced players and new comers. Choupo Moting and Vincent Aboubakar being the only experience players in the list when it comes to the World Cup, adding another experienced defender won’t be a bad idea.

Michael Ngadeu and Harold Moukoudi falling out of favor in the eyes of Cameroonians.                                                     Many Cameroonians no longer trust Harold Moukoudi and Michael Ngadeu at the back given their numerous defensive errors. This leaves the coach with only Castelleto as the best center back option and then Jerome Onguene who hasn’t impressed Cameroonians too so far.

Joel Matip isn’t the only player Rigobert Song is trying to convince at the moment. Anthony Elanga, William Saliba, Youssouf Moukoko and Bryan Mbuemo are all on the radar of the head coach.
