Despite not having secured their qualification yet, Sadio Mane believes Cameroon is one of the 2023 AFCON favorites and can challenge Senegal for the title.

Senegal are the reigning champions and will be looking to defend their title in Ivory Coast next year.

“The job we have is to defend our title and it’s not something easy on this continent” said the Senegalese national team captain in an interview with Senegalese media house, 2STV.

 

“The AFCON is full of surprises, but we know the usual best teams like the host (Cote d’Ivoire), Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, Algeria and Cameroon. These teams are the best teams and we have to put that at the back of our minds“. He continued

Of the teams he mentioned as favorites, only Ghana and Cameroon haven’t qualified for the tournament yet. Ghana must avoid defeat in their last match against CAR in September inorder to grab their qualification ticket. Cameroon on the other hand play Burundi in a must win match. A defeat or a draw will likely see the Indomitable Lions miss out on next year’s AFCON and Burundi getting only their second AFCON Group Stage appearance in history.

Senegal is currently one of the most inform teams in the continent. They recently defeated Brazil 4-2, making history as the only African country to score four against the South American giants.
