Did you know Samuel Eto’o is still Mallorca’s all time top scorer despite leaving the club 18 years ago?

Former Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o scored an impressive 68 goals for Mallorca in 156 appearances for the Spanish side.

Samuel Eto’o who retired from football in 2020 is now Cameroon’s football federation president after being elected earlier this year.

Samuel Eto’o joined Mallorca in the 1999/2000 season on loan from Real Madrid. He scored six times in 19 appearances for the Spanish side at the age of 19.

Eto’o made his Mallorca stay permanent at the end of the season after Mallorca agreed a club record fee(at that time) fee of £4.4million.

The following season, Eto’o started getting fans attention with his playing style and goal scoring ability. The season also saw him get more playing time as compared to the previous season. Eto’o bagged 13 goals and 3 assists in 30 appearances for his club, he was 20 years old at that time. Mallorca president at that time President Mateo Alemany commented on his style of play, “I doubt if there is any other player in the world who would please the fans more at this moment.”

In the 2001/2002 season, Samuel Eto’o suffered a drop in form, he managed 9 goals and 1 assist accross all competitions for Mallorca that season.

He was back at the top of his game in the following season, scoring 19 times and assisting thrice for Mallorca accross all competitions and also guiding Mallorca to a Copa Del Rey(Spanish Cup) title triumph. In the run to the finals, he scored twice in their 4-0 win against his former employersReal Madrid in the Copa Del Rey semi finals second leg. He scored twice in the finals against Recreativo de Huelva. Eto’o returned the fans’ appreciation when he donated €30,000 in meals to travelling Mallorca supporters who made the journey to the Copa del Rey final.

In the 2003/2004 season, his last season with Mallorca, Samuel Eto’o reached his best ever season tally for Mallorca, registering 21 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions. He attracted a lot of interest from Europe after that season including former Employers Real Madrid who wanted to bring him back to the club. Eto’o left Mallorca that season as a club legend and made a move to Real Madrid’s biggest rivals FC Barcelona where he continued his glorious career.

Eto’o’s 21 goals still stands today as the highest goals scored in a season by a Mallorcan player and his 68 goals still put him as Mallorca’s all time top scorer.

What makes the record so interesting is that he achieved this feet between the ages of 18-24 years.

Earlier this year, Mallorca recognized Samuel Eto’o’s achievements with the club by unveiling his Mural in the club’s Stadium.
