“Sign a record deal because it matches your vision” Mr Leo on Record labels and deals (Read more).

“Sign a record deal because it matches your vision” is one of the pieces of advice given by Mr Leo to artists.

This comes after the industry saw a good number of record labels being established. Artists have also been signing to these labels so the Lion of Africa gave his word to artists in the form of a letter. He writes:

Dear Young Cameroonian Artists.

I’ve made my own fare share of mistakes in the industry. And if i can share my “widows might”. Here is what I’d advice about record deals.

Sign a record deal, because it matches your vision and the business makes sense.

Record Labels are business; no matter how close you guys get to be. The contract is the binding document. The record label does not replace your family, it does not replace your friends. You are not an employee. You still need a balanced life.

The more you ask from a label, the more skin in your game you have to give them. If you ask for an advance, a house, car, allowance,
Etc they may give, but you will have to pay for it.

The real expenditures you should care about is, how much is going into production and promotion, if it’s recoupable then you must ensure to have a vote into how the budget is validated, so that incompetence or bad faith from each party does not affect the other.

This comes from an experienced artist who under his Lionns Academy has given a platform for others. This is priceless information to many young artists who will learn from it. Stream “Muziki Vol 1” below:
